Using and Growing Weed for Medicinal Purposes

Among all the recreational drugs that can alter the mood of a person, only alcohol exceeds weed.  You can produce weed by drying and then shredding its “hemp”. THC is the main active ingredient in weed that would make one lose inhibition and lose his sense of time. This also results in increase in visual sensibility and imagination, though only temporary.

Yet, the medicinal benefits of marijuana are undeniable, despite the fact that is causes addiction to the user. Buying, selling, possessing, using and growing weed is now legal in some states in the US, under the Controlled Substances Act of 1970. It was once included in the line of Schedule 1 drugs. This means that this item has that potential to be abused but had not proven medicinal value.

However, further studies have discovered that weed has high therapeutic values and would benefit the well being of people. If weed is used in regulated amounts as a therapeutic drug, it can help people with glaucoma, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, cancer, AIDS and chronic pain. The United States Food and Drug Administration does not approve smoking or growing weed. However, many people are becoming interested on its medicinal properties and are conducting researches on the weed.

The US federal government has not yet approved the legalization of using, possessing or growing weed, even for medicinal purposes. However, thirteen out of the more than 50 states have passed laws favoring the use of weed for medicinal purposes. Such states included Montana, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Maryland, Alaska, and Washington. However, possessing, using and growing weed is limited only within the state in which this is allowed. In addition, seventeen other states, plus the District of Columbia are now planning to legalize the use of weed for medicinal purposes. Yet, it is good to know that the state laws are not to be used as protection for its citizens from the federal laws and regulations.

Residents of the thirteen states in the US are required to get MMJ cards so that they will be able to grow and use weed as part of their treatment. In order to obtain these cards, the residents have to register themselves first. If they already have availed the card, they can already use or grow weed in regulated manner. They can even get these weed from dispensaries, which provide services such as evaluation and consultation.

To sum it all up, regulated intake of weed for medicinal purposes give positive results for patients who are suffering from grave medical conditions. But because of its addictive properties, there are still debates on using, possessing and growing weed.
